2011 Gear Guidelines

September 5th, 2011

Okay guys and gals, it is time to address the one aspect of the Thin Blue Line that raises it’s ugly head annually…GEAR.  Like last year, we will be using the NRA TPC guidelines.  They can be reviewed at http://www.nrahq.org/law/competitions/tpc/equipment.asp.  If you are an IDPA or IPSC competition shooter on the weekends I know the temptation is great to bring your fancy gear that you have spent good money on and come up and blaze the courses at the TBL.  Please remember that this match is designed to be shot with the same gear you use on the street, every day.  We grant as much latitude as we can but we must keep things level for all shooters.  Many of our shooters and their agencies use the TBL as a training opportunity and actually use their duty gear so let’s keep it simple.  If you are using gear that you think may be questionable, get in touch with me but  be sure to bring your duty rig in the trunk of your car….just in case.  As far as I’m concerned you are all winners regardless of your scores and the weapon you use to get that score!

FOP SPEAKS OUT

March 5th, 2011

The Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 10, has been a strong and generous supporter of the Thin Blue Line Charity Challenge since we began this back in 2007.  This blog is not a forum for policitical debate but this piecce of news is releveant, timely and just plain worth posting here.  I received this in an email from Mike Loftis, President of Lodge 10.

RESPONSE OF CHUCK CANTERBURY, NATIONAL PRESIDENT, FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE TO STATEMENTS MADE BY GLENN BECK ON HIS RADIO PROGRAM ON
 3 MARCH 2011

We know that Mr. Glenn Beck considers himself to be a friend to law enforcement, but he needs to get the facts before he acts–just as a police officer would.

The National Fraternal Order of Police had no role in organizing and is not participating in any of the demonstrations taking place in Madison, Wisconsin.  That said, we strongly and unconditionally support the right of public employees to bargain collectively.  For rank-and-file law enforcement officers, the ability to sit down with the employers and discuss workplace issues–from officer safety to wages and hours–is critical if the officers are going to be able to complete their mission.  We would not deny any public employee the same rights and thus we  sympathize with those who find their rights threatened–especially public employees who do so much for so many at every level of government.  In any State where the rights of public employees are threatened, we are concerned about the rights of the rank-and-file law enforcement officer.

The Fraternal Order of Police strongly supports the right of the people to assemble peaceably when they do so in accordance with local, State and Federal law.  Law enforcement officers provide security for thousands of demonstrations every year to ensure the safety of the participants and that of the general public.

We provide this security regardless of whether we agree or disagree with the issues that the demonstrators are presenting.

Mr. Beck’s criticism of Mr. Anthony K. “Van” Jones and the American Dream movement may be justified.  We have absolutely no relationship with Van Jones, and the National FOP is not part of any nationwide movement except our own.  We reject any assertion that Van Jones may make regarding systemic police brutality.  His record of inaccuracy speaks for itself.  The FOP represents law enforcement officers; Mr. Jones represents an agenda.

On his radio show today, Mr. Beck stated that the cops have “acted stupidly,” which is an irresponsible statement to make without all of the facts, whether uttered by a radio personality or the President of the United States.

Any suggestion that the FOP is just a union in a league with a vast labor movement is an inaccurate one.  The FOP is not just an organization representing police, we are the police.  When our leadership speaks out on issues, they are conveying the perspective of the rank-and-file law enforcement officer, not a national labor movement, and we know our interests better than any radio host.

Dorchester Does it Again!!

November 11th, 2010

The 2010 Thin Blue Line Charity Challenge is in the books…and the Dorchester County SO Team took top honors for the 2nd year in a row.  Congrats to a team that clearly takes their shooting seriously!  I have to say that not only do these fellows shoot well, they are really nice guys.

I hope you all enjoyed the match.  I heard lots of really nice comments about the stages, the pace and the overall experience.  Since this match is for YOU I would really appreciate getting your comments.  I want the 2011 TBL to be even better than the 2010!

For those of you who won a prize, please take a moment to send a quick email to the sponsor who provided that prize, okay?  It is my job to “court” Thin Blue Line sponsors and letting them know that you appreciate their contributions to the match will kepp them coming back year after year.

The 2011 match will be hosted by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.  I want to thank Anderson for their participation and support for the past 4 years.  It still hasn’t been determined whether the match will be shot in Anderson at the Skip-J or at the Greenville Gun Club.  I will let you know just as soon as that decision is finalized.

Please continue to check here for updates.  Pictures from the 2010 match will be posted on this site in the next few days.

Thanks

Ron

Almost here!

October 9th, 2010

20 days and the bullets will fly!!  We currently have 124 shooters registerd for the match.  Most of the prizes have arrived and while this year’s prize table won’t be as rich as years past I think you will be very pleased with what we have ready for you!

Important:  please consult http://www.nrahq.org/law/competitions/tpc/standards.pdf if you have any questions about your gear.  We are adopting the NRA’s TPC gear rules this year.  Too many complaints about the gear that is being used by some teams, so this should quell any concerns you have.

Schedule:  Please plan to be at the range around 7:30 Friday morning.  The plan is to have a shooters briefing at 8:00 and get the first shots fired by 8:30.  Lunch:  I plan to shut it down from 11:30 - 1:00 for lunch.  Complete the stage you are shooting at 11:30 and when done, head for the lunch area.  We will resume at 1:00.  After the last shot is fired we will have a Sheriff Shoot-Off with John Skipper of Anderson, Steve Loftis of Greenville and Chuck Wright of Spartanburg…this ought to be a ton of fun!  After that we will meet at the main tent and announce the winners and distribute the prizes.  Please do NOT pick up your prize during the match.  Wait til the end…our sponsors deserve that.

We will have representatives from Palmetto COPS at the match.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to get to see all of you again this year!  See you in Anderson on the 29th!  If you have any questions or problems, give me a call at 864-905-5733.

Good news and GREAT news!

September 22nd, 2010

The good news is that the registrations are trickling in.  Some of you just like to see an old man sweat, don’t ya!  :-)

The GREAT news is that Mossberg has joined our list of sponsors!  AND…there is a good chance that Para will donate a 2nd gun for you!  I am visitng their facility in Charlotte tomorrow and will plead my case that you folks are worth a second gun.  I believe it and will try to make them believe it as well.  We are lucky to have so many good sponsors who support law enforcement and want you to know it!  ADS has also signed on this year.  While ADS doesn’t have a huge presence in South Carolina at this point, look for them to break into this market and offer some great products and pricing for law enforcement.  You can check them out at www.adsinc.com and see what they have to offer.  They plan to have a table set up at the match so you can go by and get acquainted with them.

Speaking of sponsors, guys and gals, this match would not be possible if it were not for the generous sponsors who send money and prizes.  Literally EVERYTHING you see at the match has been donated!  This website is even donated by Brad Whitfield of Electric City Consulting.  I hope you will take the time to flip through your Match Program and see how many great folks are behind you in this event.

Time to Register!!

August 27th, 2010

Okay folks, no more procrastination!  It is time to register for this year’s big match!  Custom Images, our tee shirt sponsor, needs to have the sizes before they start printing our shirts.  Unless you will fit in a size Large you better get on the ball!  Go to the Regisration Form link, http://www.thinbluelinesc.org/data/tbl_registration_form.pdf, print it out and fill it in and then fax it to me or mail it.  If you are unable to send the registration fee right now, no problem, you can bring it the day of the match.  What is critical is that I get you registered early enough to get your tee shirt ordered.  I need to also plan the meal for enough people.  As of right now I can pack sandwiches for the few who have already signed up!   :-)

Our sponsors are hanging with us again this year and we have added a few new ones!  Unfortunately, Remington has backed out.  You know times are hard when the largest gun manufacturer on the planet can’t pony up even one shotgun!  We do appreciate their past support of you guys and hope that maybe they wilol come back onboard in the future.

As always, you can email me at ron@rmgcollects.com if you have any questions about this year’s match.  I have intentionally gone outside of the law enforcement community for stage designs this year.  That should quell any controversy about one team being more familiar with the stages than the other teams.  Robert Holleman, Match Director of the SPSA, has put together some really great stages this year.  For the first time in the Thin Blue Line Charity Challenge there will be a shotgun used in one of the stages!  We will provide the shotgun and the ammo.  All you need to bring is your speed and accuracy for that stage.  I will publish a total round count on this blog within a couple of weeks so you can budget your ammo.

I really do look forwad to seeing all of you on October 29th at the Skip-J in Anderson!

Moving right along…

June 23rd, 2010

Things are progressing nicely for our match!  While at the Carolina Cup in Oxford NC I was able to secure a sponsor - the Target Barn - for our Safety Officer Contest.  I was also able to confirm that EOTAC will again be clothing our Safety Officers for 2010.  Frank Glover of The Range in Oxford will be coming to Anderson with a crew of his own safety officers and a pretty dandy stage for you to shoot.  I hung out with David Baker of The Arsenal and they gave us 3 shooters prizes right there on the spot.  Good things are happening, folks!

So far I have not received a single registration.  None, not any.  Whatcha going to do, wait till the last minute?  I have updated the registration form on this website so please, please take a minute, download it and get it to me real soon.  140 is the max number of competitors we can shoot thru in a single day event.  We got pretty close to that last year so if you want to secure your team’s slot, register early.
